Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology certified (sponsored) Practical English Proficiency Examination, abbreviated “Eiken”, is perhaps the most popular English Proficiency Examination in Japan. The Eiken is representative of the tests taken by students of general English with more than 2,500,000 people taking the test annually. Some of the benefits of holding an Eiken Certification include, receiving preferential treatment on entrance exams both domestically and overseas, recognition as
credit, advantageous for teacher employment examinations, etc. to name a few. Without a doubt, the King of English Proficiency Examinations!
The Eiken is divided into 7 levels from Grade 5, beginner, Grade 1, resembling native speakers.
Grade 1 | University Advanced Level: Sufficient understanding of English necessary for a wide variety of social situations and able to precisely express personal opinions. |
Pre-Grade 1 | University Intermediate Level: Understanding of English for everyday living and social situations, can especially express things orally. |
Grade 2 | High School Graduate Level: Understanding of English for everyday living and business situations, can especially express things orally. |
Pre-Grade 2 | High School Intermediate Level: Understanding of simple English necessary for everyday living, can express things orally. |
Grade 3 | Jr. High School Graduate Level: Understanding of basic English, can express things orally |
Grade 4 | Jr. High School Intermediate Level: Understanding of foundational English, can understand simple English and speak. |
Grade 5 | Jr. High School Beginner Level: Understanding of beginning English, can understand simple English and speak. |
